Russian language is used by 5.9 % of all web pages on the Internet

RU Domain has become the most popular national as top-level domain (TLD) in September of 2011, and its popularity continues to grow uninterruptedly. Russian is used not only by 89.8 % web sites on RU Domain, but also by 88,7% of all sites on SU Domain, which should have been losing its market share, but actually is still popular.

Russian is also the most frequent Internet used operating language of some post-Soviet republics. And so for now it’s used by:

  • 79,0% sites in Ukraine
  • 86,9% - in Belarus
  • 84,0% - in Kazakhstan
  • 79,6% - in Uzbekistan
  • 75,9% - in Kyrgyzstan
  • 81,8% of Tajikistan Internet web sites.

Nowadays Russian language is at 6th place among frequently used on a thousand of the most visited Internet sites - after English, Chinese, French, German and Japanese.

Most of Russian language sites (62.0 %) based on UTF-8 Encoding; 37,5% of Russian sites use Windows-1251 encoding; and KOI8-R encoding still in use by 0.4 % of Russian zone web sites.

Russian is the second Internet leading language and it is going to keep its actual position in the foreseeable future. And the most likely candidate as a Internet-second-place-language is Chinese.

However the gap is still significant for now.
