Novgorod the Great had a special place among Old Russian cities. It was competing with Kiev and Moscow for the right of being a capital of Rus. It was the richest boyar republic. A trade turnover of this city had no equals. The famous way «from Varangians to the Greeks», connected Scandinavia and Byzantine Empire, went through Veliky Novgorod.
BUT! Archeological digs and an analysis of ancient chronicles allow us to claim that modern Novgorod on Volkhov river has never been a large political and trade centre. And some parts of ancient texts contradict a Russian history in general and particularly a history of Veliky Novgorod. So is the city on Volkhov river the famous Mister Veliky Novgorod?
